If you can choose between the brightest stars with low team spirit and good players with high team spirit, decide for the latter. Winning is all about spirit.
In 2013 I attended the America’s Cup finals in San Francisco bay. The two fastest boats from the pre-series, Emirates Team New Zealand and Oracle Team USA contended against each other for the trophy.
An awesome souvenir and unforgettable learning for two reasons. First, to see the fastest sailing boats ever (AC America’s Club 72 class) live. 72 feet foiling catamarans, sailing well over 40 knots (74km/h, 46mph) in the right conditions. And second to experience a once-in-a-life time manifestation of what spirit is all about.
Emirates Team New Zealand seemed to be the faster boat and in the morning of race day nine it lead the series 8:1. The first to 9 points wins the finals and everyone was convinced, that was it for Oracle Team USA. But Jimmy Spithill, the skipper of Oracle Team USA never gave up, consistently motivating and encouraging his crew while working relentlessly on improving the boat speed between the races. Finally Oracle Team USA has completed 9:8 what has to be considered one of the greatest comebacks in all of sports history, winning eight straight races after facing elimination in each and every one.
Since, I know winning is all about self-confidence and spirit of your team.
