Empowerment - the magic word. What does it mean?
Empowerment has many levels. From giving decision power for negligible things to your team members to giving them full responsibility for the bottom line results you are at the end accountable for.
When our company has been acquired by Vinci Group, we had no choice. We had to organize our business by business units, each of which is headed by a business unit executive with bottom line responsibility for the EBIT of his/her business unit. And the empowerment to act autonomously.
It was the best thing I have ever experienced in 43 years of doing business. Over the next 18 months the whole organization got a sense of it’s costs and profitability. And many employees developed from fulfilling their job roles to becoming creators of new business ideas and even new businesses (new business units). A whole world of opportunities.
When I tell this story I often hear: ‚My team is not yet ready for it‘ or ‚This will never work in our organization‘.
But I can tell you, if my team and I could do this transformation any people centric leader and his team can do it.
